Fall Break

Activities during the autumn holidays for children and adults

Can you storm the redoubt? After lying in front of the huge Danish redoubts for almost ten weeks, over 30,000 Prussians stormed the Danish redoubts on April 18, 1864. On weekdays during the autumn holidays, you can try to be a Prussian soldier during the Storm of Dybbøl.

We go out in front of the redoubt and follow the Prussians’ road up to and all the way into the redoubt. Up from the protective trenches and directly towards the Danish guns that spew grenades and grapeshots at us. The history center’s cannon is of course fired, and it is a completely different experience when you stand in front of it. We continue over foot angles, chevaux-de-frises and harrows, down into the moat, through the palisades and up the rampart, where the Danish soldiers are ready for battle. How fast is it going and how many survive?

You can also try the history center’s other activities. In the soldiers’ camp, you can trade with the sutler, bake pancakes according to the field cookbook, have a chat with the blacksmith and cast a bullet, telegraph and write an old-fashioned letter with ink to the family, seal it and have it stamped as mail from Dybbøl. In the redoubt, you can visit the blockhouse and the powder magazine and hear the soldier fire his weapons.

Inside the history center, we show the films Doomsday for Denmark about the war of 1864 and The Attack on Als about the war’s decisive battle on 29 June 1864. We recommend that you end your visit with a walk along the original Danish positions outside the history center and a trip over to Dybbøl Mill.

If you are looking for experiences during the autumn holidays that can give the whole family a unique insight into a bygone era and an important piece of Denmark’s history, then there is good reason to stop by the History Center Dybbøl Banke, which you will find at Dybbøl Banke 16 in Sønderborg.

Note: The majority of the guided tours will be ind Danish.
